He Gong, “Pisces,” Mixed media on paper, 32” x 37.5,” 2025

$6,300.00

Curatorial note:
In Pisces, He Gong offers a layered self-portrait as both painter and patient, memory-carrier and myth-breaker. Wearing the formal suit coat he reserves for exhibition openings, he paints with a portable plein air set and table—tools once emblematic of the 1970s artist generation in southwest China. Above him hovers his usual painting uniform, an empty jumpsuit suspended by IV tubing—an apparition of illness, endurance, and creative labor. To the left, a skeletal ribcage walks upright in trousers, a surreal embodiment of bodily vulnerability and artistic persistence. A British telephone box floats to the right, absurd and vaguely threatening. The McDonald’s “M” glows faintly in the background—a cipher of globalized banality. This is a geography of personal mythology: marked by survival, staged in fragments, and suffused with quiet revolt. Painting, for He Gong, becomes not escape but continuity—the air beneath wings that no longer need to fly.
