He Gong, “The Distant Canal,” Acrylic & oil on canvas, 48” x 44,” 2025

$9,200.00

Curatorial note:
A cascade of toilet paper bisects this apocalyptic landscape, absurd yet sublime—a post-pandemic Babel that critiques global excess. Anchored by a fractured ziggurat and flanked by container ships, a blue plastic horse rears atop a ventilator block, absurd monument to commodified resilience. The Statue of Liberty flickers behind, powerless against the tidal logics of empire. Below, a book asks “What Can We Do?,”  its cover closed to us, the thickness of its pages exposed. The pelican stands sentinel—ancient, indifferent. Affective geography here spirals outward: from urban sprawl to ecological grief, from parody to elegy. The painting collapses past, present, and myth into a surreal terrain shaped by crises both literal and symbolic.
