Curatorial note:
In You’ve Been Warned, He Gong orchestrates a vivid, layered tableau of flood myths, most directly evoking Noah’s Ark. A naked figure (the artist) stands to the left, hunched over a map where the Ark is prominently rendered, sounding a bugle whose call seems to pierce the layered sediment of the surface. A doppelgänger, smaller and more distant, mirrors this stance to the right, clad in dark trunks, bugle in hand, feet planted at the map’s center. Overhead, bruised clouds roil with hints of yellow, as if the sky itself were burning, a reminder of nature’s turbulent witness. The work’s surface is richly over-inscribed, with scraped veils and palimpsests of cartographic lines suggesting strategies for survival amid catastrophe. Both figures appear as heralds and witnesses, their bugles calling across time, warning us of floods—literal and figurative—that we are already within.
