*SOLD* – He Gong, “May: Tinnitus as Metaphor,” Acrylic on paper, 32.5” x 41,” 2024

$7,800.00

Curatorial note:
In May – Tinnitus as Metaphor, He Gong renders the unseen torment of chronic tinnitus into a visual field of ears and megaphones—symbols of both physiological affliction and historical trauma. The megaphones, echoing the incessant ideological broadcasts of the Cultural Revolution, press in with oppressive force, evoking the artist’s early psychic strain and the loss of his father to political violence. Yet counterpoint emerges in the presence of the piano and its inner mechanics—a delicate but potent symbol of resistance through sound. Music, especially classical, becomes sanctuary and salve, the aesthetic counterweight to sonic brutality. The canvas vibrates with conflicting frequencies—noise and harmony, memory and present—mapping an affective terrain where listening is both burden and act of survival.
